Whether you come craving a large hearty lasagna or a sampling of mini meatballs and ravioli, Monjunis Italian Cafe & Grocery is a delightful culinary gem that brings a slice of Italy to Baton Rouge’s lively restaurant scene.
I ordered small spaghetti with extra meatball and warm bread. The spaghetti sauce and meatballs were good. Both were seasoned well. Came with a small container of shredded Parmesan cheese . I would have given five stars if there was more sauce on the noodles. I had to pay for extra sauce. Overall, good food. My order was made on line. Service was fast.
Went here for the first time for my son's birthday. It is a very crowded space as they are trying to fit as many people as possible. Service is about average. Went without refills for a little while a couple of times. However we drink a lot and they were small glasses. But overall, she was very kind and got it done. The food was good. My son enjoyed his spaghetti. Their red sauce is a bit sweeter than some places, but we all enjoyed it. They do bring out bread, but we didn't know until after we ordered breadsticks, so we had LOTS of carbs. Haha. They did bring a bread pudding, but they do not do anything as far as singing for birthdays, just in case you are curious. Haha. Will likely return, but I definitely want to be sure it's during slower hours next time.
Having lived in NY for 35 years, I acquired a taste for authentic Italian food. Which is hard to find here in Louisiana. Seen this place on a Google Search and my first impression was “Mom & Pop”. Which any good Italian restaurant in NY is. “Mom and pop” in NY, means made with love, family cooking. It is a term of endearment. That first impression was dead on! I knew I was in the right place when the Olive Oil and Vinegar for the bead as at the table waiting on me! And they have Cannoli’s !!!! I had the Lasagna, which came in the largest portion I have had here Louisiana. We also had a Sicilian Flat Bread, which was awesome. Yep, this is a NY style “Mom and Pop”, but one with a Louisiana flavor! Yeah, you need to go here!!!!
Unique place to go. A lot of different trinkets to look at instead of your awkward date while you wait for your food. They offer freshly brewed sweetened and unsweetened ice tea. The sauce is S W E E T; like you can envision grandma dumping sugar bag sweet. The sauce has a beautiful red color and isn’t too runny nor too thick. The lasagna hit the spot! One of the best ones around. Garfield the cat would be proud! The eggplant stack was also delicious. It was not greasy and had a crunch on the outside. It was not mushy on the inside, it was cooked just right. What was great about the appetizer is that we didn’t look like we were playing hot potato in our mouths. It was the perfect temperature. Oh and the complimentary bread was good.
From the outside this looked like a bit of a dive but the staff was very friendly, the decor was kitschy but cute, and the food was very tasty. Went here with a teen and a tween boy and everyone left happy. I would eat here again.
Visited back in May with a friend. It's easy enough to find along the strip with plenty of parking in front. The waiter was wonderful and so was the bartender! (My friend got a long island iced to go with her food.) We even ended up dining outside in the front. Lovely atmosphere, great people, awesome food, and nice prices for great portion sizes.
